We are all trying to do too damn much. Since it isn’t actually possible to do ALL the things at once, we quit.
Until motivation strikes and….once again….we attempt doing everything at once.
We decide to change it all. Now. The Perfect Person Program. We think we “should” be able to do it. It seems like everyone else is doing it. That person on Instagram did it.
The truth is, habits and new behaviors take time. I know. SO boring and NOT sexy and not what you saw on Instagram.
You have to integrate change into your life. Not someone else’s life. Yours. As your life currently is. Not the life in your head.
Deciding that you want something to be different is a good first step, but how are you going to get there?
Try This One Thing: Change Your Environment
Willpower only goes so far and only lasts so long. There is nothing noble about suffering while surrounded by the things you want but know you don’t need. Until you can’t.
Instead, set yourself up for success.
If you want to drink more water, get a large stainless steel or glass water bottle, figure out how many of those you need to drink a day, and then keep it somewhere obvious.
Basic I realize, but effective.
If you want to eat less sugar, get the sugar out of your house. Yep.
Same rule for alcohol.
If you want to meditate each morning, get your cushion or chair set up the night before.
If you want to eat more fiber, make beans or lentils and store those in the refrigerator so that you can add them to meals throughout the week. Buy avocados and actually eat them. (Am I the only one that buys avocados with the best of intentions only to watch them rot and sacrifice them to the compost can?) Have vegetables washed and prepped and ready to use.
Our human brains like to make things complicated.
Choose one thing. Only one. NOT the entire list of suggestions I just made.
Do that one thing. Track what you are doing. Evaluate. Is this helping? How do I feel? Yes and good? Keep doing it. If not, adjust.
Once that thing has become part of your daily routine, try something new.
Rinse and repeat.
When our behaviors change, we change.
This happens one very small step at a time.
While change takes time, starting down multiple paths that were never leading anywhere takes exponentially more time. This leaves you feeling tired and defeated. An experienced guide can make all the difference.
