Happy New Year friends!
So many of us start the new year with big ideas, big dreams. THIS is going to be the year! We have the best of intentions.
We want things to be different. We feel dysregulated. We know something is off.
We come up with a plan. Or we decide to follow that thing we saw on Instagram, from the latest podcast we listened to, from the latest book we read. That random person succeeded. So will I!
Despite a number of problems, this plan often stems from feelings of lack. Feeling not good enough. Not enough discipline. Not enough willpower. We have failed in the past. We beat ourselves up.
Fueled by a temporary burst of motivation though, we think, this time will be different! How? Not sure, but this time will be different.
Without even knowing your plan, I can tell you it’s destined to fail.
I have not seen people make meaningful, lasting change from a place of punishment.
Instead, start here.
You can apply this to any area of your life but we are going to use your health as an example.
Chronic stress, extra weight, gut issues, hormonal issues, exhaustion. These are just a few signs that your body is dysregulated.
Before you try to solve these problems, and there are absolutely solutions and it is important that you do solve them…I want you to come at it from a different angle.
Start with deep gratitude, awe, and wonder for your body.
Your body is a freakin’ miracle!
Think of what it does each and every day. Think how resilient it is.
It carries you through this life. It can carry and nourish life.
It allows you to experience the world and all of the sensations.
The invigorating cold of a winter’s day.
The warmth of a sunny beach.
The touch of a loved one.
The joy of dancing.
The burn of a good workout.
The smell of a delicious meal.
Or hyacinths.
The view from the top of a high peak.
The beauty of freshly fallen snow.
The sound of birds or your favorite music.
Your three year old’s voice.
The quiet of 5:00 am.
The stillness during meditation.
Think of your brain and all it has the capacity to do. It is truly miraculous.
Feel this deep gratitude, awe, and wonder.
Take a moment to do this daily. Maybe before you even get out of bed each morning.
Say “thank you”.
And then craft your plan. From a place of love. Feeling what’s possible. Feeling resourceful.
Don’t wait to feel whole until after you have accomplished your goal. Feel whole now. Take action from this point.
Change is possible. A new way of being in the world is possible.
Your thoughts sound trivial, but they are everything.
Set yourself up for success. Make your plan doable. Actionable. Specific.
