I am going to take the next few weeks to explore some common myths. I will speak for myself in these posts, but I think there are a lot of misconceptions about those who work in the field of nutrition and wellness. These misconceptions revolve around the idea of PERFECTION. I am hoping to give you a glimpse into my personal perspectives, beliefs, and approaches to wellness.
We are going to start with one near and dear to my heart.
Myth: I am constantly judging what everyone else is putting in their mouths.
Truth: This one just simply isn’t true. I have had my own struggles with food and excess weight. I love food. It tastes amazing. It brings me joy.
I grew up in a family that struggled with weight. My mom “battled” her weight her entire life and I watched. Constantly dieting. Not participating fully in life. Feeling insecure and less than. Through strict deprivation she ended up losing 100+ pounds later in life and kept it off. Amazing, right?! Well…there was still something missing. A hole that wasn’t filled. So much missed over the years. She is still holding that pain to this day. I don’t know that she has ever seen or felt the beauty I see in her.
Like Geneen Roth, author of Women, Food, and God (I highly recommend) says, “It’s not about the food and it’s not, not about the food.” There is so much wrapped up in what and how we eat. It’s a window into so much more.
Being CURIOUS and STRIVING is where the gold is. It’s in the work itself that you will find what matters. That’s where you learn about yourself and what you are capable of. You learn your weaknesses and patterns. Your strongly held belief systems. What are they? Are they even true? Should they still be driving the ship?
You learn how you have been showing up in your life. You get to CHOOSE if you want to show up in a new way. This awareness (sans the judgement) allows you to try new systems and approaches.
So no, I do not judge. I understand the struggle intimately. I know it can be hard. I know the emotional struggle and the feelings of inadequacy. Even though you are suffering, it feels better, FAMILIAR, to resign yourself to this is just how I am. To give up on yourself. Over and over again.
I ALSO know that change is possible. A new way of being is possible. A new perspective is possible. It’s not easy. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies. Forging and staying committed to that new, imperfect path though, is the only way through to a future of your choosing. And best of all, it’s the adventure of a lifetime.
If you are struggling with stress, extra weight, sugar and carb cravings. If you are just fed up and want to feel better, I can help! You don’t have to do this alone. It would be an HONOR to go on this adventure with you.
