Look Back to Look Ahead

January 1, 2027
Feels like a lifetime away, right? There is so much happening between now and then. You might be saying, “it’s not even Halloween yet.” And yet…2027 is right around the corner.
So what do you want the first day of the year to look like? How do you want to feel? What do you want to take with you from this year? What do you want to leave behind?
For many people, the last couple months of the year is a total whirlwind. We are overscheduled and over extended. We put our heads down and go. By January we are exhausted, stressed, and miles away from where we wanted to be.
Maybe we let our goals slide. This definitely happens with health and wellness goals. We eat and drink more than we want, knowing that January 1st is right around the corner. We abandon our fitness routines. While there is definitely a time and a place to relax and let off the gas a bit, many of us fall victim to all or nothing thinking and let everything go. We have the idea that we will “start over”, with a clean slate in the new year. It’s the, “I’ll start Monday” syndrome, only extended. And as those of us who have used this line of reasoning know, Monday never truly comes. We are constantly planning to accomplish our goals rather than actually starting.
I have started the practice of looking back and then looking ahead to determine how I will move forward. Taking some time to write down what I have accomplished this year that I am proud of and what I would still like to accomplish, gives me direction. I make more intentional decisions. For me, part of what I want at the end of the year is connection with the people I love and more moments of being slowed down. I want to show up for myself and my people, calm, happy and engaged. I know that I am more likely to show up this way when I am taking care of myself. This doesn’t mean a major overhaul but consistently doing the simple, everyday habits I have in place. Eating the nutrient dense foods that nourish me (along with occasional treats), moving my body in a way that is appropriate for me, meditating daily, maybe a hot shower by candle light at the end of the day. Practices to calm my nervous system are especially helpful this time of year.
So take some time this weekend to reflect and write. Look back on the year. What are you proud of? Maybe this year has been really hard. What have you learned that will serve you going forward? That is an important question. What do you want to accomplish in the last quarter of the year? (Can be big, wild, small, or even a state of being.) How do you want to feel on January 1, 2027? And then let your brain get busy finding answers. You might find that some thought and intention sets you on a very different path with very different outcomes.
Knowing that the months ahead will be full of challenges means this is exactly the right time to bring in support. When you are ready to take action and make a change, you need more than information. You need accountability, support, and compassion. You need someone who can see further down the road and anticipate the road blocks to your goals ahead. Someone who can guide you through those moments of resistance, where the work gets hard, because it will. The points where many people give up. That’s exactly what you get inside my program.
