Standard Operating Procedure. The company you work for or the business you own likely has them. What are they? Why do they exist?
Goals are important. Revenue goals by week, month, quarter. Hiring goals. Client acquisition goals.
As an entrepreneur, I have run a number of businesses and these are all important metrics for success.
We need goals. But goals on their own are worthless.
HOW do we recruit new talent? HOW do we market our services and find our best customers? HOW do we treat these customers and employees once we bring them in? HOW do we provide value?
It is what we do every day and HOW we do it that allows us to reach our goals in a sustainable, healthy way.
This is where Standard Operating Procedures come in. Your SOP is where you anticipate and solve for problems ahead of time. The systems you incorporate to maintain a high level of performance. Where you outline your procedures. It explains how you do the various tasks. A good SOP has the values and mission of the company or organization built in.
So yes, create a big goal. Break it down into smaller goals. Identify your KPIs or key performance indicators that you will use to evaluate your progress towards meeting that goal.
But make sure you have a well thought out, intentional SOP as your foundation. Standards for how you operate. Different from your goals. What you do every single day so that you CAN reach your goals.
Do this with your health and wellness. Keep it SIMPLE.
What are you going to do everyday that will allow you to accomplish your bigger goals? What are you committing to? More on commitments in this BLOG post.
Start from where you are (where you truly are) and make this doable.
Perhaps you have been using an old standard operating procedure that isn’t working. Eating food that doesn’t make you feel good, not moving your body, drinking a little too much, or sacrificing sleep are all standards. What are the results?
So….How are you going to show up for yourself today? What are you going to do when your best laid plans get derailed? Be realistic. They absolutely will. How are you going to show up for yourself then?
Shameless plug: The 10 Pillars of Sturdy and Resilient Health email series you get when you subscribe to the AWN email list is a good place to start. Pick one thing from that list and begin. :)
I am going to drink this much water every day. I am going to move my body in this way every single day. I am going to sit in silence for five minutes every morning. Whatever you decide, commit to it. These are steps that will make it possible for you to achieve your bigger goals.
When are you going to do these things? For how long?
And most importantly, HOW are you going to do these things? Full of love and grace? In service of your vision? Or full of judgment; beating yourself up? This MATTERS.
You create a Standard Operating Procedure for your health and wellness so you can make progress towards your goals. So you can move forward and not stay stuck in a place that is full of suffering. A place that is keeping you small and defeated.
You create a Standard Operating Procedure to free yourself from what is no longer serving you.
Take some time today to write it down. What do you VALUE about your health? What is important to you? WHY is this important? What is one wellness goal you would like to achieve?
And then choose one or two actions that you will commit to doing that align with your values. That will point you in the direction of accomplishing this goal. Get specific.
Decide HOW you are going to show up for yourself.
And then do what you have committed to. Build from there. These become the standards you live by. It gets to be that SIMPLE.
I would love to hear how this goes.
