Back to Basics

As I am approaching my 51st year, I am feeling a pull to get back to basics. To focus on what’s foundational. I have spent many years collecting and gathering: Ideas, experiences, ways of being, information, stuff.

I recently moved my son out of state for his freshman year of college. My daughter is not far behind and I am wanting to soak up every moment.

At the same time, I have been navigating my mother’s journey with dementia. I am holding the logistics of her life, what she has collected and accumulated, while witnessing her very real and not so gentle decline. Much of what I am holding, hers and mine, doesn’t seem to matter. Not really.

I know that I am not alone in this. We are all carrying so much. Ours, others. In need of a pause, if even for a moment.

Perhaps this is the pearl inside these big life events. The things that happen that change the trajectory of everything going forward. The ground that seemed so solid, but is no longer there. Maybe these shifts bring clarity. Discernment. Maybe they force us to drop what’s not working, what’s no longer serving. The obstacles and blockades; often self imposed.

The reality is that these moments give us an opportunity and nothing more. The opportunity to see with a bit more clarity and to choose something new, something sustaining, something nourishing. Whether we keep grasping and clinging to the familiar, the comfortable. Or whether we adopt a new posture. One that is open and receptive, while also being vigilant and steadfast. Informed and forever hopeful. Knowing what matters. What is worth our precious time, energy and attention.

And then having the courage, awareness and support to choose that again. And again.

I am choosing to focus on what is real and what is true. I know our health and wellness is foundational. To everything. To our relationship with others, ourselves, to our experience of the world. And while there are absolutely events and outcomes that we have no control over, we also have immense influence and agency in this life.

So…Come with me. Let’s discover what truly matters together. What moves the needle. What actually works. Tangible, proven skills you can practice and learn.

Let’s rediscover how to take impeccable care of ourselves and our loved ones.

So you can take that pause. So you can be present in your life.

To the joy, the pain, the constant change, the wonder.  All of it.

You can choose to stay numb, confused and distracted. Not feeling good in your body or in your life. I know what that feels like. People spend lifetimes in this place.

Or you can choose a new path. Paved with support and truth.
